FAQ

A little bit about Handmade Soap

What is Cold Processed Soap?

Cold processed soap is made by combining oils & sodium hydroxide lye, which causes a chemical reaction called saponification. Saponification is the chemical reaction needed in order to make soap. CP (cold-processed) soap also needs a set time of usually 3-6 weeks in order to cure: allowing the water used in the process to evaporate to create a harder bar or soap.

Is Cold Processed Soap Preferred?

Since I started making Cold Processed (CP) soap I have not gone back to store-bought & it’s been almost 4 years. For me, it’s definitely preferred! Cold process soap has no added detergents, which tend to strip the skin of its natural oils & irritate skin. The soap making process has the added benefits of including additional ingredients such as clay, butters, essential oils etc. to make a more gentle, skin-loving bar of soap. Not to mention the ability to make a unique looking bar with intricate designs!

Why Coconut Bay Soap?

I start making each limited-edition small batches of soap by asking myself: what kind of soap would I use? What kind of soap would not irritate my sensitive skin? What kind of soap would I also enjoy using?
 – rose, pink, spoonMy soaps are created with extreme care & attention to detail. With special consideration given to all the ingredients being used in each batch, which I make in limited quantities.

How do I make my bar of soap last longer?

Keep your soap on a good soap dish that can allow the water to drain properly in between uses. Generally handmade soap doesn’t last as long as store-bought “milled” soap because it is made without the chemicals, surfactants & detergents.

Do You Use Palm Oil?

No! Palm oil is an excellent addition to a bar of soap, however the harmful destruction of rain forests & the natural habitat of orangutans in order to produce this oil just doesn’t warrant me ever using it!

Do You Make Custom Orders?

I certainly do! I do party or wedding favors, give me call so we can see how my soaps can jazz up your event or special day!

Benefits of CP Soap:

  • Handmade is soap is actually soap! Mass produced soaps are often made by combining detergents, lathering agents and synthetic ingredients, and can by definition not be called soap.
  • Handmade soap contains glycerin. During saponification glycerin is created. Glycerin stays on your skin and attracts moisture from the air, which will keep your skin moisturized.
  • Total control over the ingredients. My CP soaps are made with extreme care as to the ingredients used. I prefer using locally made oils (as much as possible) because I find it makes a superior bar of soap.
